Biography

Valentina Mammana, an artist who graduated with top marks from the Academy of Fine Arts of Catania, was born in Noto in 1977. She works across painting, engraving, installation and ephemeral art: since 2022 she has been artistic director of the Infiorata di Noto and, since 2024, of the Infiorata di Taurianova; she is president of the CulturArte Noto association and vice-president of CIDAE, the international network of ephemeral-art associations.

She trained at the State Art Institute of Noto and, from 1999 to 2002, in the workshop of Liborio Curione in Trecastagni, where she earned her certificates in intaglio and woodcut. In 2003 she obtained the regional specialisation in the restoration of stone surfaces and plasterwork, a trade she practised until 2006. Since 2022 she has taught in lower secondary school.

In her painting she favours the theme of love and wooden supports, as in the cycle “Voce del verbo Amare”, which gave rise to the twelve works for the coronary care unit of the hospital in Vallo della Lucania. With CulturArte she takes Noto’s flower-carpet tradition around the world and creates social projects such as “Scarpe Rosse”, against violence towards women, made with schools in Noto.

Since 2003 she has represented Noto and Italy at ephemeral-art events in Europe, Japan and Mexico, from the Grand-Place in Brussels to Tokyo and Uriangato. In 2024 she is Italy’s representative for the multinational nomination of flower carpets to the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage.
